LTC John Peters was an ROTC Distinguished Military Graduate of Clarkson College of Technology in Potsdam, NY and was commissioned in May 1978 in the Regular Army, Field Artillery. He initially served in northern Germany with the 25th Field Artillery Detachment and the 552nd Artillery Group in Critical Nuclear Duty positions. He next served as Battalion Fire Direction Officer, then as Alpha Battery Commander in the 1st Bn, 321st Field Artillery, 101st Airborne Division. He was an honor graduate of the Field Artillery Basic Course, FA Cannon Course, and the Air Assault School and on the Commandants List of the Field Artillery Advanced Course and Command and General Staff Officers Course. He left active duty in 1984 for a career in the defense industry but remained in the National Guard as the Battalion Fire Direction Officer / Assistant S-3 for 1st Bn, 143d Field Artillery, CAARNG. Upon moving to Florida in 1987, he transferred to the US Army Reserve and served in Individual Mobilization Augmentation assignments at the Belvoir Research, Engineering, and Development Center (BRDEC), and the Missile and Space Intelligence Center, Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). In 2003 he was recalled to active duty and served 13 months on the J-3 Operations staff at USCENTCOM Forward Headquarters in Doha, Qatar. He was retired from the USAR in 2006, after 28 years of commissioned service.

In civilian life, he initially worked as a systems and flight test engineer on the radar for the B-2 stealth bomber at Hughes Aircraft in southern California. Then at Martin Marietta / Lockheed Martin in Orlando, working on the LONGBOW Hellfire missile and the LONGBOW Fire Control Radar for the APACHE AH-64D/E attack helicopter as well as other classified projects as a systems engineer and manager. He retired from Lockheed Martín in 2017, but returned part time in 2019 to continue working on radar projects.

He has been married to Sandra since 1984 and has a daughter, two sons, and four grandchildren, with more on the way.
